Turning 4140 T Alloy Bar Quenching Tempering Heat Treatment
4140 T alloy steel is a steel in the SAE steel family, designated
by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE).
The alloying elements include chromium and molybdenum, so these
materials are often informally referred to as chrome-molybdenum
steels (common variants include chrome-molybdenum, CrMo, CRMO,
CR-MOLY, etc.).
They have an excellent strength-to-weight ratio and are much
stronger and harder than standard 1045 steel, but are not easy to
weld (pre- and post-weld heat treatment is required to avoid cold
cracking)
The "T" in 4140T refers to the fact that 4140 alloy steel has
better tensile strength and yield after a quenching and tempering
heat treatment process. The quenching process hardens the steel,
while the tempering process restores some ductility and eliminates
some of the brittleness acquired during the heat treatment process.

Carbon: 0.38%-0.43%
Manganese: 0.75%-1.00%
Chromium: 0.80%-1.10%
Silicon: 0.15%-0.30%
Molybdenum: 0.15%-0.25%
The mechanical properties of AISI4140 alloy structural steel are
excellent, with a yield strength of 930-1200MPa, a tensile strength
of 1080-1350MPa, an elongation of 10-25%, and a hardness of
217-388HBW.
