Chemical composition
Like 304 stainless steel, 316 stainless steel also contains about
16% chromium. Chromium forms a dense chromium oxide passivation

erosion of general corrosive media such as air and water.
Containing about 10% nickel, the addition of nickel can improve the
toughness and ductility of stainless steel, making it easy to
process and shape. It can also maintain good toughness in low
temperature environments and is suitable for various complex
processing and use environments.
The key ingredient that distinguishes 316 stainless steel from 304
stainless steel is that it contains 2% - 3% molybdenum. The
presence of molybdenum can significantly improve the resistance to
chloride corrosion of stainless steel, giving it better corrosion
resistance in harsh environments containing chloride ions, such as
sea water, salt spray, etc. This is also an important reason why
316 stainless steel is widely used in marine engineering and
coastal area facilities.
